UK Watchdog Investigates TikTok, Reddit, and Imgur Over Children’s Data Usage

The UK’s Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) is launching investigations into TikTok, Reddit, and Imgur regarding their handling of teenage users’ personal data. The probe focuses on how these platforms utilize user information, particularly concerning children, and the potential risks associated with their algorithms. TikTok’s use of data from users aged 13 to 17 to personalize content recommendations is under scrutiny, with concerns raised about the app’s algorithm potentially exposing young users to harmful content, such as content related to eating disorders and self-harm. Reddit and Imgur’s age assurance measures, including how they estimate and verify children’s ages, and their use of personal information will also be examined. Information Commissioner John Edwards emphasized the need to ensure robust processes that prevent children from being exposed to harmful content or addictive practices. The ICO aims to identify both positive uses of children’s data and potential vulnerabilities that could lead to harm. Edwards clarified that the investigation is not specifically targeting TikTok but is motivated by its growth among young users, market dominance, and potential for harm. The ICO will assess whether any data protection infringements have occurred and will seek input from the platforms before reaching any conclusions. The goal is to establish industry-wide best practices for safeguarding children’s data and online experiences.
