Xiaomi Showcases Modular Optical System Concept at MWC 2025
At Mobile World Congress 2025, Xiaomi unveiled a new concept phone featuring a detachable lens system called the Xiaomi Modular Optical System. This innovative design aims to address the issue of large camera bumps on modern smartphones while maintaining high-quality photography capabilities. The system consists of a modified Xiaomi 15 smartphone and a 35-mm lens module that attaches magnetically to the phone’s back. The lens module includes a 100-megapixel Light Fusion X Type 4/3 sensor and uses Xiaomi’s proprietary LaserLink technology for high-speed data transfer. This allows for seamless integration with the phone’s camera app and AI features. The detachable lens offers superior low-light performance and natural bokeh effects without relying on software-based portrait modes. While still a prototype, the concept demonstrates potential for a range of specialized lenses and other magnetic accessories. However, the practicality of carrying additional lenses may offset some advantages of smartphone photography. Xiaomi’s approach to modular design appears more refined than previous attempts by other manufacturers, but its commercial viability remains to be seen.
