Scientists Develop Secure Atomic Clocks to Counter GPS Jamming Threat

A recent incident involving a Ryanair flight to Lithuania, which had to divert due to GPS interference, highlights the growing problem of GPS jamming. Over 800 such cases have been recorded in Lithuanian airspace in recent months, with Estonia and Finland accusing Russia of disrupting satellite signals—claims Moscow denies. GPS jamming poses a significant risk beyond aviation, potentially affecting financial transactions, power grids, and communication networks. The UK government has enlisted top scientists, nicknamed ‘Time Lords,’ to develop an alternative navigation system using advanced atomic clocks. Unlike traditional GPS, which relies on vulnerable satellite signals, this new system would function independently, making it resistant to jamming and spoofing. The technology, still in development, involves miniaturizing optical clocks and quantum-based accelerometers, with applications expected in military and maritime navigation before eventually reaching consumer devices. Although full adoption could take decades, researchers believe these innovations will safeguard critical infrastructure and ensure accurate positioning and timekeeping even in conflict scenarios. The UK is leading the global effort in this field, conducting test flights and investing in quantum technology to mitigate the risks posed by GPS disruptions.
