Neuralink Seeks Trademark for ‘Telepathy’ and Other Brain-Computer Interface Terms

Neuralink, the brain implant company co-founded by Elon Musk, has applied for trademarks with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) for several terms, including ‘Telepathy’ and ‘Telekinesis.’ The company is developing brain-computer interface (BCI) technology designed to interpret neural activity to control external devices. Musk has stated that ‘Telepathy’ will be Neuralink’s first product, enabling people with paralysis to control computers and phones using only their thoughts.

The trademark application suggests broader ambitions beyond assisting disabled individuals, potentially enabling direct brain-to-brain communication. Currently, three people have received Neuralink implants, and the company is conducting feasibility studies, including a newly approved trial in Canada.

Neuralink also applied for trademarks on ‘Blindsight,’ a brain implant intended to restore vision, and ‘Telekinesis,’ which could involve controlling robotic limbs. The company has previously referred to its core technology as ‘Link,’ with components such as ‘N1’ (the electrode array implant) and ‘R1’ (a robot used for implantation).

While the applications are based on an ‘intent to use’ basis, meaning the technology is not yet commercially available, Neuralink’s filing signals its long-term vision of integrating humans with AI and expanding the capabilities of brain interfaces.
