GSA Implements GSAi Chatbot for 1,500 Federal Employees to Automate Tasks
Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) has launched a proprietary chatbot, GSAi, to 1,500 employees at the General Services Administration (GSA). The deployment aims to automate tasks previously done by humans, amid ongoing workforce reductions. GSAi, similar to commercial AI tools like ChatGPT and Claude, is tailored for secure government use. It can draft emails, summarize texts, and write code, but employees are cautioned against inputting sensitive information. The chatbot’s default model is Claude Haiku 3.5, with options to use Claude Sonnet 3.5 v2 and Meta LLaMa 3.2. While some employees find GSAi’s responses generic, DOGE plans to expand its deployment agency-wide. Additionally, other federal bodies like the Treasury and the Department of Health and Human Services are considering similar tools. The initiative aligns with broader AI adoption in the federal government, including the Army’s use of CamoGPT for content moderation. However, the rapid rollout has raised concerns about potential job cuts and data security. Former Tesla engineer Thomas Shedd, now leading the Technology Transformation Services, announced significant staff reductions, focusing on public-facing projects instead.
