Skype to Shut Down as Microsoft Shifts Focus to Teams; a Look at Other Obsolete Technologies

Microsoft is set to discontinue Skype in May, signaling the end for a once-dominant video call service. The decision comes as Skype’s user base dwindles from a peak of over 300 million to approximately 36 million, according to Microsoft’s 2023 figures. The tech giant, having acquired Skype for $8.5 billion in 2011, plans to migrate its services to Microsoft Teams, its primary platform for videoconferencing and team collaboration. Existing Skype users will retain access to their accounts through Teams.

The announcement prompts a broader reflection on technologies that have faded into obsolescence. The article highlights several examples, including: Dumb phones, which have been superseded by smartphones offering extensive features beyond basic calls and texts. Blackberries, once revolutionary for their full keyboards and business communication capabilities, lost ground to smartphones’ touchscreen interfaces. Landlines, a staple in homes and offices, have declined with the proliferation of mobile phones. Storage solutions like floppy disks, VHS tapes, cassette tapes, CDs, and DVDs have been largely replaced by digital streaming and online storage.

Furthermore, portable music players such as the Walkman and MP3 players have been rendered redundant by smartphones with integrated music apps. Pagers, previously essential for alerting individuals to incoming messages, have been supplanted by the instant communication offered by mobile phones. Fax machines, once crucial for document transmission in offices, have given way to email and instant messaging. Finally, overhead projectors, formerly ubiquitous in schools and offices, have been overtaken by modern projectors and computers.
