Scientists Develop Device to Simulate Taste in Virtual Reality

Researchers at Ohio State University have developed a device called ‘e-Taste’ that can simulate the taste of various foods in virtual reality. This technology uses microfluidics and sensors to analyze the chemical composition of food and replicate it by squirting chemicals onto the tongue. The device has been tested with flavors such as coffee, lemonade, fried eggs, cake, and fish soup, with participants able to identify these tastes with a high degree of accuracy. While the device is still cumbersome and requires further refinement, it represents a significant step towards enhancing virtual reality experiences by incorporating the sense of taste. The team is also exploring ways to simulate texture and smell to create a more immersive experience. Potential applications include remote tasting of recipes or products, which could revolutionize how we interact with food and beverages online.
