Google Faces Pressure to Comply with EU Digital Markets Act

DuckDuckGo, Seznam.cz, and several consumer advocacy groups are urging the European Commission to fully enforce the Digital Markets Act (DMA) against Google. They argue that Google is not complying with the rules, particularly in how it implements its choice screen and shares search query data. While the EU is already investigating Google under the DMA, this inquiry focuses on different aspects, prompting the coalition to demand broader oversight. The letter was addressed to Commission EVPs Teresa Ribera and Henna Virkkunen.

An EU spokesperson acknowledged receipt of the letter and stated that a response would be provided. The timing of this push is significant, as the EU is facing pressure from the U.S. government, which argues that the DMA unfairly targets American tech companies. If the EU enforces stricter measures, it risks potential U.S. retaliatory tariffs.

This situation highlights ongoing tensions between regulatory efforts in Europe and the interests of major tech firms, particularly those based in the United States. The outcome of this dispute could shape future enforcement of digital competition laws within the EU.
