Kevin Rose and Alexis Ohanian Revive Digg to Compete in a Changing Social Media Landscape

Kevin Rose, the original founder of Digg, has repurchased the platform from Money Group with plans to relaunch it in collaboration with Alexis Ohanian, co-founder of Reddit. The revival comes at a time of major shifts in social media, with platforms like Reddit, Twitter (now X), and Facebook undergoing transformations. Rose and Ohanian see an opportunity to rebuild Digg as a more community-driven alternative, focusing on user connection, moderation tools, and artificial intelligence for content management.

Digg, once a leading social news aggregator, lost its prominence after a controversial redesign in the early 2010s, leading to its decline and eventual sale. Meanwhile, Reddit evolved into a dominant platform, though not without controversy, as changes in content moderation sparked backlash from its users. Rose, motivated by his regrets over Digg’s past failures, aims to create a modernized version that addresses the challenges of online communities.

With financial backing from True Ventures and Seven Seven Six, the new Digg will prioritize mobile users and introduce AI features to improve moderation and engagement. Invitations to the platform will be rolled out gradually, and the founders believe that their flexible approach will allow them to adapt and grow in a competitive social media market.
