Apple Challenges UK Government Order on Encrypted Data Access

Apple is taking legal action against the UK government in response to a secret order requiring the company to provide access to encrypted user data. The order, issued in January by the Home Office, demanded that Apple share encrypted data with UK law enforcement in cases of national security threats. However, Apple cannot access data protected by its Advanced Data Protection (ADP) feature, an opt-in encryption tool. Instead of complying, Apple decided to withdraw ADP from the UK market to avoid creating a security backdoor.

The issue has sparked international controversy, with US officials, including President Donald Trump and intelligence head Tulsi Gabbard, criticizing the UK’s demand as an infringement on privacy rights. Gabbard stated that she was not informed in advance and questioned whether the demand violated US-UK data-sharing agreements.

Apple has now appealed to the Investigatory Powers Tribunal, an independent court handling cases related to security services. The UK Home Office has not confirmed or denied the order but emphasized that any impact on privacy is only applied in extreme cases. The tribunal case is expected to be heard in the coming weeks, though it may not be made public.
